GR142 online topo guide

We have made a GR142 special with all info we have on the subject. A permanent link to this Gr142 guide post can be found in the righthand column. Writing the special, we came across the GR 142 online topo guide, Senda de la Alpujarras Granadina y Almeriense (ADR Alpujarra - isbn 84-607-3904-X) (without the maps).
We have embedded it so that you can start browsing and reading straight away:

Campings in the Alpujarras

For trail walking through the Alpujarras, only occasionally it is possible to use camping sites.
For the GR240 only the Trevélez camping lies on the route. Using the few refuge huts and wild camping (or a lot of extra kilometres) are the only solutions. See this special article on the GR240 with all stages.
For walking the GR7 through the Alpujarras, there are campings in Órgiva, Pitres, Trevélez and Laroles.
See this page with all GR7 stages in the Alpujarras from the website Mancomunidad de municipios de la Alpujarra Granadina.
For walking the GR142 there are four campings on the route, Órgiva, Pitres, Láujar de Andarax and Fondón. They are not always on a convenient stage distance. Lodgings therefore also need to be found in hotels and Bed and Breakfasts.
This article lists campsites in the Alpujarras with link to their websites. Behind each camping there is a link to its entrance in campings.net website with good maps with their exact location.

The GR142 long distance foot path through the Alpujarras

We already publicated special articles about the long distance foot paths GR7 and GR240 (also called Sulayr). We use these ´Alpujarras specials´ to gather all the information we have about these routes and we keep updating them whenever we find new relevant information. These articles therefore have a permanent link in the right hand column.
The third LDP that runs through the Alpujarras is the GR142.

Fallen wayposts on GR142 cause confusión

Yesterday guests got lost while walking the GR142 from Cádiar to Lobras. As we don´t like the idea that more people need to retrace their steps in the future, we decided to check out whether there are any changes. We found out that a few wooden wayposts have fallen on this stretch, probably as a result of the bad weather we had this winter. Unfortunately this has happened at a point which already caused difficulties in the past. Halfway on the ridge of the Loma Callón - 2,13 kilometres from Alquería de Morayma -, you need to bear right for about sixteen metres, to immediately climb up a field of almonds and figs to continue in the same south-west direction following the ridge. A red-and-white cross on a stone gives the impression that you should not enter this orchard, but what it indicates is that you need to ignore the track to the right towards a ochre-coloured new house. You also need to ignore the track to the left, although there is no red-and-white cross here. After having entered the field you see a red-and-white paint mark on a fig tree about ten trees further as counted from the edge. One of the attractive aspects of walking the GR142 is walking through orchards and vineyards. But unfortunately this has also proved to be a little bit confusing as there are sometimes no clear paths, especially after fields have been ploughed.

Almond blossom routes in February

The ´Calendario de la Naturaleza´ in the El País of Saturday the 21st of February suggests going out to enjoy the almond blossoms. Javier Rico writes that areas with height differences are best to admire the beauty of the blossoming flowers. He gives three suggestions of destinations in Spain to enjoy this natural spectacle, of which Sierra Nevada as seen from the Alpujarras is one. Living in the Alpujarras, we can be more specific. This weekend and the coming week the almond blossom in the Sierra de Contraviesa, between Torvizcón and Jorairátar, is at its peak. Walking the Sendero Local, the PR 32 or Ruta de la Contraviesa, or following a dirt track from Cádiar towards Jorairátar and back on the GR142, would be two of our suggestions. These two routes give you marvellous views towards the steep sided slopes of the Contraviesa with endless fields of almond trees, all bursting with delicate pink and white flowers.
Note: The two Senderos Locales of Cádiar are not included in the recently pusblished guide with nineteen walks that have beem newly waymarked. The waymarking of this PR32 is not to be relied upon.

GR142 Senda de la Alpujarra

There are three long-distance footpaths that cross the area. One of these Gran Recorridos is the E4/GR7, an European route that calls in at Bérchules. The GR240 or Ruta Sulayr is a newly developed LDP that circles the Sierra Nevada and passes just above our Casa Rural. The third LDP, is the GR142 or Senda de la Alpujarra. It runs from Lanjarón to Fiñana, and has a total length of 144 kilometres. It passes through Cádiar, the village we can see from our terrace. Several of our own routes, coincide partly with this Gran Recorrido. Up to today, our routes cover the GR142 from Fondales up to Cádiar. We were curious to continue on this path a bit further westwards, and found a description in Walk! the Alpujarras with Charles Davis that looked interesting. His walk 26 ´Sierra Mecina´ would give us the possibility to get to know another part. Charles Davis promises spectacular views, and after having done this walk, we can defenitely agree on this. Besides, the ´carihuela de Fondales´ that zigzags up after crossing a Roman bridge over the river Trevélez, we consider as one of the most beautiful paths of the GR142 that we are familiar with so far. The gorge is truly spectacular, and walking on both sides of the valley of the river Trevélez we enjoyed immensely on this sunny January day. Nevertheless instead of the nine kilometres mentioned by Charles Davis, the walk turned out to be over twelve kilometres, and you should therefore count on four hours to do this walk. We incorporated this route with a detailed map and a description into our ´walks file´. GR142 passes the ´Era de la Trance´ close to Ferreirola - foto: casa rural El Paraje
