Bird Count, IV Censo de Aves de la Alpujarra 16 de abril de 2011

This coming Saturday the 16th of April at 08.00 hours the second spring bird count will take place starting at the rural hotel Alquería de Morayma in Cádiar. Last year the spring bird census was done on the 18th of April, during which 37 different bird species were counted. It will be the fourth censo, as two other autumn countings were organized. From the map of this announcement the first loop will be done which is a walk of 8,5 kilometres through the beautiful valley of the Río Guadalfeo. Anybody interested is welcome to participate. The ´IV Censo de Aves´ will be led by Antonio Ramos, guide of the National Park Sierra Nevada and by the enthusiastic expert and local wildlife guide, Gary Morrell. PromoCETS 2010 is one of the promotional activities that forms part of the Plan de Acción 2009-2013 of the Carta Europea de Turismo Sostenible. During these two days, Sierra Nevada National and Natural Park will be highlighted as a destination for sustainable tourism. Report of the third Alpujarran bird census

Sunday the 3rd of October the third bird census of the Alpujarra was organized by Carmen of Alquería de Morayma, a rural hotel in Cádiar. A total of 32 different species were counted and ticked off on the list that was made by Miranda and Trevor, a British couple that has been bird watching in this area for over twenty years. Apart from adding the Dutch and scientific names to the bird checklist, we have ticked off the species sighted or heard on the past three bird counts.

Carmen published a report of this day on the website of Alquería de Morayma. This is a translation of her account of the International Bird Day celebrated on the 3rd of October in Cádiar:
"This day was celebrated by Alquería de Morayma with a beautiful walk in the valley of the river Guadalfeo. The eleven participants with different nationalities, were guided by Gary, a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable naturalist and Antonio J. Ramos, guide of the Natural Park Sierra Nevada. Anita of Casa Rural El Paraje and Carmen of the Alquería also participated.
The morning started clear and pinkish but turned windy. The day was blessed by birds of prey. The first birds that were sighted was a pair of Golden Eagles while setting off.
While walking on the ridge of the Loma de Cayón through vineyards, almond and fig orchards a number of Stonechats and other passerine birds were spotted. Under the bridge of the river Guadalfeo, an igloo-shaped nest of the Red-rumped Swallow was observed. Antonio commented that this bird started colonising Andalusia not too long ago. He added that the White-rumped Swift, another bird that has expanded into southern Spain, appropriates the nests of the Golondrina daúrica, while these two species share a territory in a curious way. Further on the Red-rumped Swallow was observed. The route continued through the Rambla de Albayar covered with gorse, rosemary and tamarisk. There was still water running through this river bed, thanks to the abundant rain fall this past winter (1217 litres/m2 measured by the meteorological station in Cádiar). As the Peregrine Falcon was sighted it got the title of ´Bird of the Day´, but it did not keep this for long. While watching a family of fat partridges running and flying up, two Goshawks appeared from behind some cliffs and took over the title. At this time of the year, this raptor comes down from the pine woods in search of food. To strenghten its first place, this pair of raptors stayed around for some time and gave a fantastic flight show. Feria de Octubre Cádiar 2010

The Feria y Fiestas de Cádiar will this year be held from the 7th to the 11th of October. This annual fair is organized by ´La Asociación Cultural Fuente del Vino´ in coordination with the municipality of Cádiar. This association was set up three years ago and aims to recover and preserve the traditions that form a fundamental part of the cultural identity of Cádiar. Officialy the Feria y Fiestas were to honour the patron saint Santo Cristo de la Salud. Nowadays the fair is better known as the Fiesta del Vino since a wine fountain was inaugurated in 1967. Last year the ´Feria y Festias de Octubre´ were declared ´Fiesta de Interés Turístico´. The programme can be found on the website of the Consejería de Turismo of the Junta de Andalucía.

Cádiar abre su Fuente del Vino con la declaración de Interés Turístico

ExpoCádiar 2010

This year the XI Edición of Expo Cádiar, Feria agroalimentaria de artesanía y turismo, will take place from the 13th to the 15th of August. All sorts of local products, handicrafts and services will be demonstrated. Posters of this fair are pinned up on many trees, so anybody passing through the area can not miss the notificación. Next to every poster of the Expo, another poster announces the free concerts on Saturday the 14th of August of Alpujarra Libre, Sajr Tambaj and Laberintho B. This same evening San Roque will be celebrated in Narila. The program can be found on the website http://www.expocadiar.com/.
 

Fiesta Intercultural los Antonios Cádiar 2010

In the summer of 2005 a group of people in Cádiar came up with the idea to organize a fiesta to unite different cultures and to share traditions and gastronomy. It was the moment that many people from different countries moved to the Alpujarras. The fiesta was a success and the organizers decided to organize it again the next year. They founded an association to enrich the event, as we can read on the website of the Asociación Intercultural Los Antonios.
This is the programme of the fifth fiesta Intercultural los Antonios that will be celebrated this weekend, Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th of June, in Calle San Isidro in Cádiar.

The area around Bérchules is well known for the number of threshing circles or ´eras´. Guests often ask what they are for. As we have assisted probably the last ´parva´ of Bérchules in 2002, we are able to explain the process. Nevertheless we were pleasantly surprised to find a photo album on the internet with old photographs of Cádiar. Antonio Medina Santiago has put varias photo albums of Cádiar on ´windows live´. The slide show ´recopilacion de fotos del recuerdo´ took our special interest. 227 Pictures of life in Cádiar as it once was. Forgotten agricultural cores like the ´parva´ come back to live. Bodega Barranco Oscuro, video

The Bodega Barranco Oscuro is situated on the high slopes of the Sierra de Contraviesa, above Cádiar. Manuel Valenzuela is a passionate winemaker with a very personal philosophy on organic wine making. This video, broadcasted on Canal Sur television on the 2nd of Janury 2009, shows Manuel and his bodega as we got to know them in our first year in the Alpujarras, helping out with the harvest. In this video he explains the making of the sparkling wine or ´cava´ using the local vigiriego grape variety. It is a ´vino natural´ so no additional sugars are added, not even from other grape varieties. These grapes, growing on the highest vinyards of europe, were actually harvested after snowfall but as he explains, without killing the natural organisms needed for fermentation. Although Manuel´s personality and talking are convincing, ´the proof of the pudding is in the eating´. Salud!

Feria de Octubre de Cádiar 2009

Each year, in Cádiar a festival takes place to celebrate the end of the grape harvest. In the past, this wine and cattle fair often took place from the 5th to the 9th of October. This year however, the Feria de Octubre starts on the 8th of October and ends the 11th of October, a day before the national bank holiday. At 13.00 hours on Thursday the 8th of October, the fair starts with the inauguration of the Fuente del Vino. This is a wine fountain from which at specific hours the local vino costa is drawn and given out during these four festive days. There is a special website on this fair, on which the programme can be found. On this programme, we can read on which hours wine will pulled from this fountain and which activities will take place during the Feria de Octubre of 2009.

Sculptures Manuel Martín at Expo Cádiar

Manuel Martín Quesada is one of the exhibitors at the Expo Cádiar 2009. At the entrance of the fair part of his sculptural project ´Por la memoria viva de la Alpujarra´ can be seen. This life-size representation of the Alpujarran agricultural heritage that is slowly disappearing, is unique for its combination of colour, shape and expresion. Outside ´la trilla´ can be seen, translated as ´the threshing´ which is always called ´la parva´ in the Alpujarra. In the background there are a few goats which are part of the representation of ´pastoreo con cabras´. A shepherd with more goats can be seen inside where Manuel Martín has another stand. Here we picked up a brochure on this magnificent project in which the sculptor explains his ideas and in which he gives information on the materials he used. Expo Cádiar 2009

From the 14th to the 17th of August the X Feria Agroalimentaria, de Artesanía y Turismo is organized in Cádiar. This fair will be opened today at 13:30 hours. Apart from a demonstration of local products, handicrafts and services there will be a few performances and cultural activities. The programme can be found on the website of the expo . The fair is every year organized during the ´puente de agosto´.

Media maratón of Cádiar, an initiative to be encouraged

The first edition of the ´Alpujarras cross country media maratón´ started in Cádiar this morning at ten o´clock at Plaza España. A hundred people took part running or walking. The scenic route was almost all on country tracks and paths and for a great part along the river Guadalfeo. The weather was good, altough for the uphill parts quite warm.
It must be appreciated that Mike and Sue Busby took this initiative in a region where walking and running for fun have little history. Apart from confusion about some parts of the exact track, other apects were well taken care of thanks to a lot of volunteers.
The male winner was Serafín Moreno Manzano in 1:32:06 followed closely by Fernando Godino Crespo in 1:32:07. The female winner Ana Manzano González finished in 2:18:17. Both winners are from Cádiar. The results and photographs will be published on the website of the organization of the Alpujarra experience.
A second edition of this media maratón should be supported. Learning from the experience of today and using the feedback of participants it can become a good tradition. Thanks Mike, Sue and all other people that contributed to the organization of this event.
PS This morning the 10th of April, we´re glad to read on the website of the cross country challenge that there will be a second edition of the Cádiar half marathon next year. We wish the new team good luck with the organization.
PS today 27th of march 2010 there is no sign of any second edition.

Almond blossom routes in February

The ´Calendario de la Naturaleza´ in the El País of Saturday the 21st of February suggests going out to enjoy the almond blossoms. Javier Rico writes that areas with height differences are best to admire the beauty of the blossoming flowers. He gives three suggestions of destinations in Spain to enjoy this natural spectacle, of which Sierra Nevada as seen from the Alpujarras is one. Living in the Alpujarras, we can be more specific. This weekend and the coming week the almond blossom in the Sierra de Contraviesa, between Torvizcón and Jorairátar, is at its peak. Walking the Sendero Local, the PR 32 or Ruta de la Contraviesa, or following a dirt track from Cádiar towards Jorairátar and back on the GR142, would be two of our suggestions. These two routes give you marvellous views towards the steep sided slopes of the Contraviesa with endless fields of almond trees, all bursting with delicate pink and white flowers.
Note: The two Senderos Locales of Cádiar are not included in the recently pusblished guide with nineteen walks that have beem newly waymarked. The waymarking of this PR32 is not to be relied upon.

Media maratón in Cádiar - April 5th 2009

The half marathon that will take place the 5th of April 2009 and that starts and ends in Cádiar, is the first one that is organised in the Alpujarras. The run will be along country tracks and paths with a small section on tarmac roads. You can run or walk it, inscribe indivually or as a group (maximum of four people). Adults pay 15€ and children 10€. A part of the revenues will be donated to the Red Cross in Granada. More information can be found on the website on the media maraton.

Expo Cádiar 2008

From the 14th to the 17th of August the IX Feria Agroalimentaria, de Artesanía y Turismo is organized in Cádiar. The fair is open to the public from 12:00 to 22:00 hours and apart from a demonstration of local products and services there will be some performances and other cultural activities.
